IP ratings of JVL motors

In JVL we have a wide selection of motors with various IP ratings.
Often the IP classification is misunderstood, so to give a better understanding, we have made this page to give a good overview of what is needed for your application.

All JVL motors with an IP classification of IP65 or above are tested with vacuum. We do this to secure that every single motor fully lives up to at least the IP classification specified.
In JVL we have our own IP test lab, with high power waterjets, submerging champers, dust test equipment, climate chamber and much more.
We are therefore proud to say that we produce some of the best high IP rated integrated motors, and we can ensure the quality of every single device sold!

Please see all the IP options for our MAC and MIS motors in our Product Part Number Builder - PPNB or ask your local JVL sales office or official JVL distributor.

Precautions when installing IPx5/x6/x7/x9K motors

When installing MAC motors with a higher ingress protection (IPx5/x6/x7/x9K) a few rules must be respected to assure no ingress over time. Please consult below manual to ensure the best protection and performance of your JVL motor.

See a JVL ServoStepTM motor run after being put through our dust and water resistance tests, and see the motor being cooled to -40°C and still work!

IP classifications:
Below is a list of the IP classifications that are possible for JVL motors.
The IP classification does not prescribe any protection against chemicals or salty environment.
For this information, please consult the manual, datasheet or contact JVL or your local official JVL distributor directly.
The IP classification does not prescribe any protection against high or low temperatures. But if the temperature is changing or cold, it is required to order the motor with coated electronics, to protect against condense.
In extreme cases, a special valve can be installed in the motor.
Please see the full list of IP test requirements here - Link:  IP-instruction manual - LA0022

IPxx
First Digit – Solids/dust:
The first digit defines the level of protection against ingress of solid foreign objects and dust.

IPxx
Second Digit – Liquids:
The second digit defines the level of protection against moisture, water submerging, water spray and water jets.

IP42 - Standard for JVL MAC050-141 motors and JVL MIS motors
Applications:

Most standard application which are installed in a generally dry area where dust is present only in a normal amount for any room.
Can in some cases be used for outside applications.
Cleaning:
Clean with a wet cloth.
Protected against:

Dust: Effective against > 1mm/0.039" objects.
Water: Dripping water when tilted at 15°.

IP55 - Standard for JVL MAC400-4500 motors
Applications:

Applications where some amount or dust or water sprays occur. Often good enough for outside applications.
Some dust is allowed, but not when exposed directly in larger quantities.
The environment can be wet with hard water sprays, but no parts of the motor must stay wet.
Cleaning:
The motor can be washed with waterjets.
Protected against:

Dust: Dust-protected.
Water: Waterjets can be used.

IP65 - High IP rating for JVL MIS motors
Applications:

Medical or food industry, industry with high amounts of dust, or outside applications.
Can be exposed directly to high amounts of dust.
The environment can be wet with hard water sprays, but no parts of the motor must stay wet.
Cleaning:
The motor can be washed with waterjets.
Protected against:

Dust: Dust-tight.
Water: Waterjets can be used.

IP66 - High IP rating for JVL MAC400-4500
Applications:

Medical or food industry, industry with high amounts of dust, or outside applications.
Can be exposed directly to high amounts of dust.
The environment can be wet with powerful water sprays, but no parts of the motor must stay wet.
Cleaning:
The motor can be washed with powerful waterjets.
Protected against:

Dust: Dust-tight.
Water: Powerful waterjets.

IP67 - High IP rating for MAC050-141 motors, Standard MAC100/101/231 motors, Standard for JVL expansion modules and for JVL M12 cables
Application:

Marine or fish industry, or outside applications.
Can be exposed directly to high amounts of dust.
The motor can be fully submerged into maximum 1 meter of water for no more than 30 minutes.
Cleaning:

The classification does not demand protection against waterjets like IP66, but JVL IP67 motors have the same protection as IP66 motors.
Protected against:

Dust: Dust-tight.
Water: Immersion up to 1 meter ( 3 ft 3 in ) depth for 30 minutes.

IP69K - Extreme IP rating for MAC100/101/231 motors
Applications:

Medical or food industry.
Can be exposed directly to high amounts of dust.
The environment can be wet with powerful high temperature water sprays, but no parts of the motor must stay wet.
Cleaning:
The motor can be washed with powerful high temperature waterjets.
Protected against:

Dust: Dust-tight.
Water: Powerful high-temperature waterjets. Close range high pressure, high temperature spray downs.
